Tips for Avoiding Auto Accidents at Intersections

October 7, 2021

Intersection accidents are more common than they should be because many of them are avoidable. Intersections feature people going in different directions, and they all need to work together to avoid collisions. A serious accident can happen if just one person does not follow the rules. Below are some practical tips to help you avoid intersection accidents.

Practice Defensive Driving

Defensive driving involves spotting and addressing potential hazards before they cause an accident. With defensive driving, you should:

  • Assume that some cars might run the red light
  • Assume that some pedestrians might cross at undesignated points
  • Assume that some people might jump in front of you without warning
  • Assume that the car in front might change lanes or stop without warning

Such assumptions allow you to create mitigating strategies in your head on how to avoid such accidents. For example, you can increase your following distance to give you ample time to stop in case other cars do not stop at the intersection.

Slow Down

Do not enter the intersection at the same speed you were driving when approaching the intersection - slow down. You might be tempted to race the yellow light to pass before it changes red. The light might change before you cross, you might crash with other drivers with the same idea, or you might lose control of your car. The best thing is to be patient and wait for the green light.

Watch Out for Other Road Users

Always remember that other people other than motorists also use the road. You should especially be on the lookout for:

  • Pedestrians crossing at crosswalks near the intersection
  • Cyclists and motorcyclists using the intersection
  • Motorists rushing to cross before the light changes

Note that pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists might not be as visible as other motorists might. The three can also easily hide in your blind spot. Thus, pay extra attention to the environment when navigating an intersection.

Watch the Traffic Control Devices

Do not wait until you are at the intersection before checking the traffic control devices. Scan the road ahead and check the devices to know what to expect about what might happen when you do get to the intersection. For example, checking the light in advance might help you notice a yellow flashing light warning you to slow down and be alert.

Change Lanes Properly

Never change lanes within the intersection as that might confuse other drivers and cause an accident. Know which way you will drive after the intersection and the lane you should follow in the intersection, and take the right lane before entering the intersection. Otherwise, wait until you are through before changing lanes.

Also, be careful when changing lanes. For example, you should signal properly, watch out for other road users, and not cut in front of other cars.

Avoid Distractions

Distractions increase accidents whenever you are on the road, but the risk increases at an intersection. For example, you might not notice:

  • The traffic light changing
  • Those not obeying the traffic lights
  • The traffic lights malfunctioning
  • Aggressive drivers not cooperating

Common causes of distractions include eating, using the phone, and talking with other passengers. Stop whatever you have been doing and pay attention to the road and your driving.

The above tips should help you stay safe through all intersections. However, accidents can still happen due to issues beyond your control.
